Background

Kennedy Centre, Belfast, is one of Northern Ireland’s most recognisable shopping centres. The Kennedy Centre sits on a site at roughly 260,000sqft. Meteor Lite were tasked with completing a full LED lighting upgrade for the entire site. This included all exterior lighting, the underground car park, service areas and all main shopping areas.

Solution

Due to the size of the project, a high level of communication with the owners and the centre manager was required. The main focus of this job was the lighting in the communal areas for customers. Because of the high levels of customer footfall, it was vital for Kennedy Centre to increase lighting levels in all areas and this was achieved by the introduction of over 650 28W LED Downlights supplied by Red Arrow Trading. This fitting was chosen because it offers reduced glare and it ensures a “modern, crisp light.” In order to help reduce energy consumption, we added presence detection to all service areas and toilets because these areas had the least amount of footfall.

Result

This new LED lighting system will help the Kennedy Centre save roughly 360,000kW of power per year through a reduction in the power required to power the lights. The LED lighting provided an increase of over 30% in lux levels in the main mall and doubled the underground carpark levels.
